Overview

Nova Explorer is an ultra-lightweight, high-performance dual-pane desktop file manager created as a modern alternative to bloated, slow default file explorers. Traditional file managers often suffer from sluggish directory traversal on large folders, excessive RAM consumption (Chromium/Electron wrappers often requiring 200MB+ idle), and limited keyboard-driven workflows.

Engineered with Tauri v2, Rust, and React 19, Nova Explorer delivers instantaneous cold startup (<12ms), a tiny installer footprint (~3.15 MB), and buttery smooth navigation across hundreds of thousands of files with zero telemetry.

Key Features & Architecture

1. Dual-Pane & Multi-Workspace Workflow

  • Synchronized Dual Panes: Side-by-side or stacked split panes allowing effortless drag-and-drop or single-key transfers between source and destination directories.
  • Tabbed Workspaces: Group folders, network shares, and local drives into isolated tab sessions with state persistence across restarts.
  • Miller Columns & Grid Views: Seamlessly switch between compact list, detailed metadata columns, and hierarchical Miller column views.

2. Super Transfer Engine with Conflict Resolution

  • Asynchronous Rust Worker Pool: File operations (copy, move, delete) are offloaded to native background threads with real-time throughput calculations and transfer speed graphs.
  • Smart Conflict Dialogs: Full interactive conflict resolution options whenever filenames collide: Keep Newer, Auto-Rename, Skip Existing, or Overwrite.

3. Instant Spacebar QuickLook

  • Zero-Latency Previews: Pressing Space instantly reveals file content without opening external software.
  • Multi-Format Support: In-app syntax highlighting for code files (Rust, TS, Python, JSON), markdown rendering, high-resolution image inspect with zoom, and embedded media playback.

4. Virtualized File Tree Navigation

  • Powered by @tanstack/react-virtual, rendering only visible DOM nodes to sustain 120 FPS scrolling even when listing directories with over 100,000 files.

Tech Stack & Performance

  • Core Engine: Tauri v2, Rust (native Windows API bindings & multithreaded directory scanning)
  • Frontend Architecture: React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS v4, Vite
  • UI & Visualization: Lucide Icons, Virtualized Lists (@tanstack/react-virtual), Marked.js
  • Distribution: NSIS installer (.exe) & WiX Toolset (.msi)
  • Telemetry: 100% offline, local-first privacy with zero tracking
